How to Know If You Have a Mouse Infestation Inside or Outside Your Home
Signs of mice in your home or business include gnawed plastic or furniture, holes in food containers, droppings, tracks, and rodent sightings. Mice can also emit a distinctive musky odor. Though typically difficult to find, their nests are usually from shredded fibers and other found materials. If you find any of these signs on your property, it may be an indication of a mouse infestation.
If you think you have mice (or rats) on your property, figure out how the mice found their way into your property. Most mouse infestations begin due to holes, cracks, or gaps in the walls, roof, or foundation of a property. You’ll want to perform a thorough inspection of your property to find any potential entrance areas and block them up. Remove all food sources and nesting sites. In addition to blocking entrance points, you’ll also want to take care of food sources such as uncovered trash cans and water dishes, left-out food, and poorly-packaged items. This will dissuade mice from making their homes on your property.
Implications of Mouse Infestations
Mice are carriers of bacteria, viruses, diseases, and parasites. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that human beings can contract the viral infection Lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) from breathing in dust that has been polluted with mouse droppings or urine. Symptoms of LCM includes headaches, fever, and nausea. If left untreated, LCM can lead to neurological disease.
How Does Traditional Mouse Poison Work?
Historically, mouse poisons have used anticoagulants to catalyze internal bleeding in mice. While effective, this method is considered relatively inhumane and has a number of associated health risks for people, pets, and other wildlife. At EcoClear Products, we developed eco-friendly MouseX® rodenticide to take a different approach.
MouseX® is made from naturally-derived ingredients to attract mice both indoors and outdoors. Once ingested, active ingredients in MouseX® coat the mouse’s stomach lining, blocking all communication between the stomach and the brain. This causes the mouse to stop eating and drinking, leading to dehydration and eventual circulatory failure. For the mouse, this process feels like nothing more than becoming tired and falling asleep.
Which Mouse Poisons Are Safe For Pets?
Mouse poisons that use anticoagulants or other harmful chemicals such as bromethalin, cholecalciferol, and zinc phosphide are not safe for pets. If ingested, they can lead to serious illness and even death. MouseX® is safe for people and animals other than mice and rats.

- 4: Place filled cling wrap bags (or MouseX® Ready Trays) in areas where you have observed rodent activity (10 feet apart in mildly to moderately-infested areas; 5 feet apart highly-infested areas). If possible, insert MouseX® into holes and runs.
- 5: Top ensure maximum effectiveness, keep MouseX® pellets dry and continue to bait until mouse activity ceases. Don’t underestimate the amount of rodents on your property. Continue to refill target locations until pellets are no longer eaten. An indicator of mouse consumption will be fecal droppings bleached in color and up to 3 times larger than normal mouse droppings.
