Bed Bugs

Not only can bed bugs live virtually anywhere that humans can...they are also VERY smart. Thriving off of humidity, bed bugs know to stay away during the day and come out at night to feed. They can also survive temperatures ranging from nearly freezing to 122 degrees. Keep reading for tips on how to identify bed bugs, prevent them from invading your home and safely & effectively killing them.

Bed Bugs

How to Identify

If you start noticing small, itchy red marks (sometimes in a row) on your arms, legs, hands, face or neck, this probably means that you have bed bugs living rent-free in your home. They are about ¼ of an inch long, oval-shaped and a reddish-brown color. Being aware of what these bugs look like, you can identify the problem quickly.

Make sure you are looking under the mattress, on the bed frame as well as be on the lookout for tiny rust-colored spots on your sheets, carpets, curtains, etc. You can also identify bed bugs by their droppings, which are dark-colored dots.

Tips to Prevent

Bed bugs are not your typical pest - they can linger on your clothes, curtains, carpet, sheets, comforter and that’s just a few places they can be found in your own home. This means you have to take action not only where you sleep, but your whole environment. Fun, we know. ere are a few tips.

Keep your bed off the wall.

When your bed is flush against the wall, it makes it easier for bed bugs to travel to other areas of your home, with their climbing talents and desire to hide in other warm spots.

Cover your outlets.

We said they were smart, right? Well, bed bugs like to use power outlets to avoid extermination. They climb into the holes of the outlets until they think the threat is gone, and can sometimes even travel through your walls using the electrical outlets, posing a threat of an infestation to other parts of your home.

Invest in non-toxic products.

Aside from the health problems bed bugs cause (allergies, bumps, allergic reactions and more), the use of home remedies or professional extermination can also cause health problems to your kids, pets and other loved ones. Toxic pesticides contain chemicals that (while effective), are not great for use around humans and other animals.
